AMERICAN WHITE WINES |
California is the most important name in American wine. Many of the technological advances,
which revolutionized wine making were invented and pioneered in California. It was California
which had the courage and talent to challenge European quality and supremacy in the 1960’s
– a move which has opened up the path to recognition for new generations of winemakers
across the world. |

Tuscany |
One of the world’s most famous red wines is produced in this region – Chianti. Chianti is produced
from several grape varieties, primarily Sangiovese with often some Canaiolo and perhaps
small percentages of two white grape varieties – Trebbiano and Malvasia. Some Chiantis
are referred to as “Classico” which come from the best parts of the Chianti region. Riserva
Chianti is aged at least one year in cast and represent the best Chianti available. Brunello di
Montalcino is made from Sangiovese as well but must be aged a minimum of 3 ½ years in
casek. The most exciting development in the region is the emergence of the Super Tuscans
which use “non-traditional” grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in their
blends. The wines of the Chianti region are medium-bodied wines that are soft on the finish
with flavors of cranberries, tobacco
and violet and textured tannins on the close. |

FRENCH RED WINES |
BURGUNDY |
The French wine-growing region of Burgundy is legendary for its legacy of both red Burgundy
(Pinot Noir) and white Burgundy wines (Chardonnay). Burgundy lies on the eastern side of
France and covers just over 100 miles. The dominating grape varietals grown in this region
are Pinot Noir (making Red Burgundy wines), Chardonnay (making White Burgundy wines) and
Gamay (making Beaujolais). |
